Practical Experience

The TESOL Certificate at University of Toronto complements the latest theory in TESOL with lots of hands-on practice. Please note that the practicum and volunteering opportunities mentioned here are reserved for current TESOL program students (unless otherwise noted).

TSL566H1 TESOL Practicum

All program students are required to complete a 50 hour practicum which includes 30 hours of observation, 20 hours of practice. The Academic Coordinator sets up these placements for students, which take place in a variety of settings. Practicum students are paired with qualified, experienced TESOL Trainers who meet the standards of TESL Ontario and have at least 2000 hours of teaching experience. In addition, TESOL students are required to attend five 3-hour classes with the course coordinator. These classes offer students an opportunity to reflect upon and discuss their experiences observing and teaching. TESOL students are also required to participate in an on-line discussion group.

Students must complete three pre-requisite courses and a police check in order to enrol in the Practicum course. Please see the link below for further details.

Volunteering Opportunities

All students in TSL562H1 Transition to the Classroom are strongly encouraged to become involved in volunteering during their time in the course. Volunteering gives students an opportunity to practice the theory they learn in their courses, while allowing them to get additional teaching experience and build their professional network. Volunteering can involve leading or participating in a conversation group, assisting an ESOL instructor in the classroom, working one-on-one with English language students, or helping out in a settlement or newcomer centre. Commitment runs from 2 contact hours per week to 4 hours per month (minimum 8 hours over the term is required for the TSL562H1 assignment).

Not Enrolled in TSL562H1 but still want to volunteer?

Current students and alumni of the program who are interested in volunteering (but are not enrolled in TSL562H1) can email the TESOL program office and ask to be put on the volunteering listserv. Please include your student number and when you will finish/have finished the program. We will send news of any volunteer opportunities through the listserv.
